Objectives: The significance of HIV-related oral manifestations (HIV-OM) was recognised since the start of the endemic. Recently however, there has been a perception that the disease pattern has changed and that the HIV-OM are no longer a significant health issue. The purpose of this paper was to review the reported prevalence of HIV-OM worldwide since 1980, to determine the global variation in their prevalence over time. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Google scholar were searched, using the keywords; oral lesions/conditions/manifestations, HIV/AIDS. The filters “English language” and “adult” were used. This strategy was applied in four time periods: 1980-1990, 1991-2000, 2001-2010 and 2011-2015. Data were extracted using the JBI standardized-data-extraction-form and transferred to SPSS22 for analysis. |
