Popis: Aging affects the lower urinary tract and is a recognized risk factor for voiding dysfunction and urinary incontinence. The reported prevalence of urinary incontinence in community-dwelling older persons ranges from 10–40 % and up to 70 % in residents in aged care residential facilities. Discrepancy in prevalence rates has been attributed to differences in inclusion criteria and definitions. Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and urinary incontinence are often overlooked in the elderly as a result of embarrassment or the symptoms mistaken as a normal part of aging. LUTS and urinary incontinence have been associated with worsening quality of life (QOL). Morbidity of urinary incontinence in the older patient includes increased risk of falls, urinary tract infections, urinary retention, renal deterioration, and skin irritation.
