Popis: Border Archaeology (BA) was instructed by Ken Munday to produce an Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment (ADBA) for 96a & 96b South End, Croydon, London CR0 1DQ (NGR TQ 32439 64519) in connection with the demolition of the existing residential building and commercial area and erection of a three-storey block containing a ground floor commercial unit, 1x 3-bedroom, 2x 2-bedroom and 3x 1-bedroom apartments (Planning Ref: 22/02822/FUL). This ADBA assesses the impact of the proposed development on buried heritage assets (archaeological remains) and forms an initial stage of site investigation enabling the local planning authority to formulate an appropriate response. The archaeological potential of the proposal site has been assessed in overall terms as Moderate, with particular reference to encountering archaeological remains of Roman and post-medieval date. The potential to encounter remains of prehistoric and medieval date is assessed as Low to Moderate. The site lies within the London to Brighton Roman Road Archaeological Priority Area and archaeological interventions recorded in the vicinity of the proposal site have revealed evidence for Roman activity within the study area. The rapid development of the proposal site itself during the 19th and early-mid 20th century is likely to have had a substantial impact on the survival of any below ground archaeological features and deposits dating from the prehistoric to medieval period. It is possible that only deep cut archaeological features survive in-situ alongside any buried structural remains associated with the post-medieval development of the site which have not already been truncated or removed by subsequent building phases. Recommendations: It is Border Archaeology's considered opinion that, prima facie, the archaeological potential of the site does not present an impediment to the proposed development. Given the Moderate potential of the site it is recommended that an appropriate programme of archaeological work, the details of which to be agreed with the Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service, will be necessary to determine the extent, depth and significance of buried archaeological features and deposits across the site.
