The unsettled role of x-ray therapy for carcinoma of the ovary has been complicated further by the demonstrated sensitivity of this disease to antitumor drugs. The records of 915 patients admitted to The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute during the years 1945–1965 have been reviewed. A group of 239 patients from the over-all case material received chemotherapy ( l -sarcolysin) alone. In evaluating the total patient material of 915 cases according to treatment by stage of disease, we have attempted to compare patients treated by strip irradiation alone, chemotherapy alone, or a combination of these treatments. Irradiation will continue to be used in the management of inoperable carcinoma of the ovary, possibly more effectively in combination with chemotherapy. |
