Popis: | Interest in Creativity and the Self mainly stems from sociocognitive and differential perspectives focusing on creativity as an “outcome” of Self-related constructs (e.g., creative self-beliefs, creative self-efficacy). This chapter outlines a humanistic and developmental perspective supporting the reciprocal relationship, that is, how creativity can support the development of the Self in general, and the formation of identity in adolescence, in particular. Specifically, after presenting a developmental framework to understand the relationship between creativity and identity development in adolescence, this chapter highlights three main aspects of creativity that may contribute to the development of identity. Accordingly, creativity may (1) strengthen the thinking process involved in identity formation, (2) provide attributes for self-definition, leading to a positive self-esteem, and (3) give outlets for “adaptive” self-expression. Implications for applied perspective capitalizing on an adolescent’s creative potential to support a positive identity development are discussed. |
