Young adult cancer survivors (YACS) are at risk for various chronic diseases, and physical activity (PA) can reduce this risk, improve quality of life, and decrease chances of cancer recurrence. Given YACS’ desire for social support and the rise of social media, researchers have incorporated Facebook within PA interventions. However, little is known about how YACS perceive Facebook social connectedness. Participants in the IMPACT PA intervention trial (N = 140) completed the Facebook Social Connectedness Scale (FSCS) at 3, 6, and 12 months; a sub-sample (N = 36) participated in post-intervention interviews. Results reveal that FSCS declined over time, and participants with high FSCS scores perceived the secret Facebook group more positively than those with low FSCS scores. Findings suggest that using Facebook within PA interventions may be beneficial for YACS. Future research should address how social connectedness may be related to health behavior changes, including improvements in PA. |
