The structural and mechanical characteristics of a system consisting of methyl methacrylate polymerizing in a precipitant-solvent mixture

Popis: The viscosity characteristics of and structure formation in a system consisting of methyl methacrylate polymerizing in a mixture of a solvent (toluene) and a precipitant (cyclohexane), have been studied. It was found that separation of the polymer as a second phase, with change from a homogenous to a heterogeneous system, causes a decrease in the viscosity of the polymerizing mixture. It was also found that if the molecular weight of the polymer being formed is reduced the region where the polymer phase separates is displaced toward higher degrees of conversion.
