The viability of barley seeds subjected to 6 MeV deuteron beam

ISSN 0018–0661. Received May 31, 1983 The viability of barley seeds subjected to 6 MeV deuteron beam for 5 seconds was analysed. It was found that the viability depended on the site of hit by the beam. AU the seeds hit on the embryo region (FA1) and in the region close to it by about 1 mm (FA2) produced either abnormal seedlings or were dead. The side containing the embryo was defined as the front part of the seed. On average about 60 % of the seeds hit in the front upper half region (FA3) of the endosperm produced normal seedings. Most of the seeds hit in the BA2 and BA3 regions of the endosperm, corresponding to the back of FA2 and FA3 regions, germinated normally.
