The growth pattern of short-day plant (S.D.P.) Chenopodium rubrum was changed following the treatment with 5-azacytidine (azaC, concentration 10−4–10−9M), a specific hypomethylating agent. The apical meristem was enlarged and formation and growth of axillary buds were stimulated. Main stem growth was inhibited. The magnitude of these changes depended on the age. Concentration 10−8M was the most efficient. Application of azaC does not substitute the photoperiodic flower induction, but slightly increased the percentage of flowering in the induced plants. This phenomenon is probably due to a general decrease of apical dominance. |
