Popis: The expression height equivalent to one theoretical plate (H) is a quality parameter in (process-) chromatography for column packing and particle size distribution of resins. It is found that the value of H, ubiquitously known and accepted by chemical engineers and scientists, is heavily dependent on determination conditions. Determinations of H from pulse experiments and frontal analyses are inconsistent for the three chromatographic resins tested. Varying mathematical methods influence H as well as the salt concentration of the eluent buffers. The biggest difference is found when comparing the H-values of one resin ; the difference, determined by using different methods, was in the range of 2 orders of magnitude. Due to these results, the user of chromatographic resins is advised to interpret H-values supplied by manufacturers carefully and to take into account the dependency of the results on the methodology and conditions of determination.
