The first chapter addresses some of the basic elements associated with statistical analysis and attempts to clarify some of the confusing language and synonyms. Statistics can be divided into two major types: (1) descriptive statistics to summarize sample data and (2) inferential statistics to make statements about an entire population from which the sample was taken. Presented will be steps to consider in performing a statistical procedure and important assumptions associated with all statistical tests. Identifying the types of variables in the study is critical because they will dictate the type of descriptive and/or inferential statistics that are most appropriate to test and report. Briefly discussed will be sampling plans, reportable values, rounding, and significant figures. Minitab is introduced as software to provide a rapid and efficient method for statistically analyzing sample data. |
