Popis: Many Palearctic shorebirds spend the northern winter in the islands of the western Indian Ocean. However, only in Madagascar is sufficient wetland habitat available for large numbers but to date these birds have been largely unstudied. Surveys of all wetlands and selected points in the coastal mangrove of southern Melaky and Menabe in western Madagascar in September-November 2004 found 5,485 shorebirds of 14 species. Repeat counts were made at several sites in December 2004 and March-May 2005.
