Youth who experience homelessness have diverse circumstances and needs; some are members of homeless families, and some couch surf and stay with friends, while others are literally homeless on the street or living in parks or abandoned buildings. Clinical environments need to be welcoming, appropriate, accessible, and acceptable to youth. Youth may present with emergent medical conditions including acute suicidality, psychosis, opioid overdose, or sexual assault and need urgent stabilization and referral. Youth commonly need help with acute medical problems, reproductive healthcare, evaluation and management of sexually transmitted infections, and management of chronic medical conditions. When young people access healthcare, there is an opportunity to assess needs and link to other treatment services as well as to schools, shelters, housing, and other services that can provide stabilization and support. |
