Popis: Mechanical debridement with or without antibiotic administration is currently considered as the first line of defense against periodontitis. However, the development of resistant bacterial strains due to injudicious use of antibiotics is the major limitation of this method. Hence, most of the research is focused on the development of alternative antimicrobial therapies. As an adjunct to periodontal debridement, photodynamic therapy (PDT) may have the potential. PDT, where a laser light is used to activate a photosensitizer dye, has emerged as a promising solution, as it can suppress the anerobic bacteria. This review explicates the evolution, mechanism of action, and application of PDT in Periodontics. PDT is still in the experimental stages of development; hence, more clinical studies and research are required to confirm the efficacy of this treatment strategy.
