Popis: Plants being sessile entities lack to choose an advantageous habitat and hence have a necessity of forming positive interactions with prokaryotes and other eukaryotes. The role of symbiosis in the co-evolution of microorganisms and plants in certain cannot be undervalued. It is an imperative strategy for ecological adaptation and plant resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses causing establishment of long-lasting associations. Legumes are closely related to other plants proficient in forming a symbiotic association with N2 fixing Rhizobium bacteria. The N2 fixing bacteria provide a source of reduced N2 confined to specific facultative root organs termed nodules. The signalling transduction events, as well as the genetic investigation in development of nodule, have become a significant approach in the research of nodulation and require further attention. Hence, in this chapter we define the detailed mechanism of legume-Rhizobium symbiosis, encompassing the parameters of specificity, nodule organogenesis, and Rhizobium nodulation (Nod) factor signalling. The molecular genetics of signal transduction along with feedback controlling mechanisms of nod factor signalling has also been described.
