Popis: | The study of metal road bridges was commissioned by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) as a two-stage project. Stage One is intended to establish the parameters and criteria for a thorough assessment of historic metal road bridges in Victoria. It has involved a thematic study of the history of construction of metal road bridges in Victoria; development of criteria for the assessment of the heritage significance of metal road bridges; identification of all metal road bridges of potential cultural significance; and preparation of sample detailed assessments of nine bridges for each category of level of significance. The study has resulted in a far-more critical approach to the assessment of significance and has demonstrated the value of quantitative assessment focussed on the definitive criteria of a specific site type in conjunction with the generic approach of existing assessment criteria. The proposed stage two is envisaged as a detailed assessment of all significant metal road bridges with the potential to expand the study to cover bridges of other materials as well as rail, pipe and foot bridges. |
