Popis: | SUMMARY.— There is considerable evidence that electrolytes can penetrate the stratum corneum but there is no evidence on whether this penetration occurs through or between the corneum cells. In this paper evidence is presented which shows that the equilibrium water content of intact corneum immersed in electrolyte solutions depends upon the electrolyte concentration and obeys the laws of osmosis. Removal of lipid by solvent extraction destroys the osmotic properties. This evidence indicates that the osmotic properties of corneum depend upon the presence of a lipid-containing semipermeable membrane system. Other evidence indicates that this membrane system is the cell walls of the corneum cells themselves. If electrolytes cannot enter the corneum cells in these osmotic experiments it follows that they cannot enter the corneum cells during penetration through the stratum corneum and that they must therefore pass between the cells. |
