Colliding-beam source for polarized ions

Popis: We describe the design and performance of a source of polarized negative hydrogen ions which employs collisions between polarized neutral hydrogen atoms from an atomic-beam source and fast neutral cesium atoms. The neutral cesium beam (20–40 keV) is obtained by neutralization of a Cs + beam in Cs vapor. Beam currents of 3 μA polarized H − and D − have been obtained from the source. The ion source is installed on a tandem accelerator and is in routine use for nuclear physics experiments. Measurements of beam polarization [(9 ± 1)% for protons] and beam emittance are reported.
