Background: The advent of personal mobile devices and the popularity of the Internet are generating unprecedented amounts of data, which can be harnessed to shed light on—and potentially mitigate—public health concerns. Objective: To provide a theoretical overview of digital phenotyping (DP), as well as examples of DP in practice. Results: Digital phenotyping has been successfully employed to diagnose PTSD in trauma-stricken populations and to localize the source of infectious disease outbreaks. These are only two of the many potential applications of this technology. Conclusion: Digital phenotyping is a relatively low-cost, yet powerful tool for both assessing the health status of individuals as well as analyzing broader public health trends. |
