Popis: Loss of Po 210 activity from bare, polonium metal sources is expected from both evaporation and knockout of surface atoms. Knockout by recoil Pb 206 atoms is much greater than knockout by α-particles. Evaporation exceeds knockout at moderate surface temperatures and so forced cooling of even small sources is necessary to minimize loss of polonium. The theory of both mechanisms and the buildup of activity outside a source in vacuum are discussed.
