Popis: | Much water has flowed under the bridge in Malawi since Cynthia Crosby produced the first and second editions of the Historical Dictionary of Malawi in 1980 and 1993 respectively. In the early 1990s, the Malawi Congress Party's stranglehold on intellectual and everyday life began to falter. As the party's political monopoly was challenged, so too was its capacity to privilege some histories over others. This change is reflected in the third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Malawi, reworked by Malawian historian Owen Kalinga. As a result, this general reference text in the African Historical Dictionaries Series published by Scarecrow Press is not only much longer than Crosby's two editions (489 pages of text and bibliographical information as compared to only 169 in the first edition and 203 in the second) but also differs in tone and content. Not surprisingly, Kalinga has revised entries on the 1964 Cabinet Crisis and its participants and expanded the one-half page entry on "exiles" found in the first edition to a more detailed discussion of exile politics in the 1970s and 1980s.
