Popis: | Since February 1957 observations have been in progress in Sydney on extensive air showers of lO/sup 5/ to lO/sup 7/ particles. The following measurements are currently being made: (a) determination of shower size and core location, (b) directions of incidence of showers, (c) comparison between particle densities as measured by a scintillation counter and a tray of Geiger counters, (d) the lateral spread of high-energy gamma mesons and lowenergy nucleons, and (e) Cherenkov light pulses associated with showers. Besults of measurements (a), (b), and (e) are reported. One of the calculations carried out by an electronic computer consists in computing the density of shower particles at various specified points in the array for each shower. The observed number of particles is plotted against the predicted number. There is good agreement between prediction and observation. The computer w;s used to predict the densities of scintillation particles,'' densities of panticles as would be measured by one of the scintillators, at the position of the unshielded tray of Oeiger counters. A graphical representation is made with the predicted density of scintillator particles as ordinate and the number of Geiger counters discharged in each event as abscissa. It is apparent that the density ofmore » particles as measured by scintillators is not very different from thnat measured by a tray of Oeiger counters. (A.C.)« less |
