Structural characterization of an eight-coordinate Nb(IV)-edta complex, [Nb(edta)(H2O)2]·2H2O

Popis: Shiny dark-brown crystals of [Nb(edta)(H2O)2]·2H2O were obtained by reaction of an aqueous solution of Na2H2edta with a zinc-reduced, concentrated hydrochloric acid-ethanol solution of niobium pentachloride, followed by neutralization with 4 M NaOH to pH ≈ 1.5. The structure of the title complex, as determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, revealed a hexadentate edta4− ligand and two water molecules coordinated to the Nb atom in an approximately square-antiprism geometry. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n, with Z = 4, a = 11.373(4), b = 11.418(5), c = 12.117(4) A , β = 103.73(3)°, V = 1530.8(9) A 3 , Mr = 453.18, Dcale = 1.966 g cm−3, R = 0.0247 and Rw = 0.0496 fpr 2156 observed reflections with I>1.50σ(I).
