Popis: | INTRODUCTION: INDIVIDUAL PATTERNS IN NAMING In many human societies there is a belief that the bestowal of names can manipulate behavior. When names are assigned to newborn children, such magical thinking guides the choice of names in the hope that the child will exemplify the traits embodied in the words (Beadle 1973). While the frequency of names collected in a field situation is not a direct expression of the frequency of the use of names, such research could at least formulate some impressionistic information as to whether there is a tendency for certain names to be used much more than others. |
