Within a State Program for 2013–2020 “Development of Pharmaceutical and Medical Industry” pharmaceutical enterprises switch to innovation-driven growth model and perform technological re-equipment of production assets. Modernization of pharmaceutical production resulted in the change of employees’ labor conditions, for which reason we considered an issue of compliance of new labor conditions with regulatory requirements as a subject matter for our study. To address the issue, we carried out inspection of manufacturing sites, analysis of operational and technological documents, instrumental examination and evaluation of physical factors of working-environment (illumination, noise, vibration), workplace air (chemical factor, strongly fibrogenic aerosols), workload and intensity of workflow. The survey revealed that at workplaces of granulation operator, tableting machine operator and packing line operator the illumination is at least 300 lx, which complies with hygienic standards, and at workplaces of warehouse operator and unskilled worker values lower than the acceptable ones are registered. Measurements of noise levels at workplaces don’t exceed the maximum permissible level 80 dB. Vibration values are not registered or at a minimal level. Our examination of workplace air showed that concentration of harmful chemical substances and strongly fibrogenic aerosols is lower than maximum permissible concentrations, established for them. Workload and intensity of workflow are within hygienic standards. Notwithstanding safe exposure levels of workingenvironment factors, the enterprise provides the employees with individual protective equipment to create favorable working conditions and also gives attention to the employees’ rest: interruptions in operations to prevent overtiredness, meal breaks in a designated canteen. There is an equipped sports ground for active recreation. Thus, switch to innovation-driven growth model and mechanization of pharmaceutical production allowed to reveal positive changes in labor conditions of pharmaceutical enterprise employees for a number of specific harms, such as: strongly fibrogenic aerosols, chemical substances, noise and vibration. Workload and intensity variables also notably decreased. Based on our ‘in situ’ studies, we conclude that noise and vibration level at workplaces, as well as level of concentration of chemicals in the of the workplace air, predominantly fibrogenic action aerosols, just as severity and intensity of the labor process correspond to hygienic requirements and are evaluated as acceptable working conditions, while illumination at some employees’ workplaces correspond to hygienic requirements, or are even below established hygienic standards. We certainly realize that pharmaceutical company, whose experience we have investigated, is significantly different from other enterprises in this area. Its uniqueness is achieved as a result of the transition of the pharmaceutical company to an innovative development model, both processing and social modernization, manifested by improving employees’ working conditions and social security. However, we believe this model should be implemented as widely as possible in Russian pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
