Popis: This article argues that the Roman emperor Hadrian, known for his attention to the arts and, in particular, the architecture of Rome, chose a site for his Mausoleum with dynastic claims in mind. Sitting beside the Tiber on the Vatican Plain, the tomb is not only visible from afar, but is placed within a network of sightlines between pre-existing landmarks and buildings, both in the immediate vicinity and at some distance across the city. These sightlines emphasise the emperor's dynastic lineage, and also suggest his eventual apotheosis, in order to ensure his successors the requisite divine parentage for peaceful accession to the throne.
