Popis: Constant Δ K tests on specimens of 2024-T351 A1 alloy have been performed. Fatigue crack growth starts in the tensile mode, but then shear lips are developed if ΔK is high enough. The crack growth rate of the unstable tensile mode at the start of the test and the “stable” shear mode crack growth rate have been measured. A model is presented to predict the “stable” shear mode crack growth rate using the unstable tensile mode data and shear lip width data. The predictions fit the experimental data very well. Based on the model also da/dN vs a for constant amplitude tests at different R - ratios , thicknesses and frequencies can be predicted. An explanation for the observed temporary decrease of da/dN in some constant amplitude tests has been given.
