Spatially-encoded single-scan NMR offers an enormous improvement in speed for multidimensional NMR measurements. A typical two-dimensional experiment can be completed in less than a second. This review offers a simple and largely pictorial description of the basic concepts underpinning this ingenious technique, and outlines the relationship to conventional NMR methodology. Simple vector model descriptions are presented with the goal of understanding the basic spin physics of this complex experiment. Detailed and more mathematical treatments can be found in the original publications of Frydman and coworkers, listed among the cited references. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
