The present study was carried out to assess the effects of ethanolic and methanolic extracts of two non-flowering plants; Adiantum capillus-veneris (fern plant) and Funaria hygrometrica (moss plant) at different concentrations (1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%) on unfed and fed nymphs of Argas persicus. The percentages of mobile, immobile, and dead nymphs were recorded two-day intervals for 20 days and molting was recorded daily after the treatment with all extracts separately at different concentrations by using the dipping method. The results reported that all extracts at different concentrations caused a decrease in the percentages of mobile nymphs, either unfed or fed, and a significant increase in the percentages of both immobile and dead ones when compared with the control. The highest mortality (96.7%) of fed nymphs was recorded in methanol extract of A. capillus-veneris at a concentration of 4%. So, it is considering an ideal effective biopesticide. Besides, the percentages of molting nymphs are decreased significantly in all plant extracts, and the highest concentrations tested (either ethanol or methanol) in both plant extracts did not record any molting nymphs. Throughout the study, fed nymphs were more susceptible to plant extracts studied than unfed ones. This study is the first report to demonstrate the acaricidal activity of A. capillus-veneris and F. hygrometric alcoholic extracts against A. persicus nymphs (unfed and fed). |
