Popis: Traumatic head injury is a leading cause of disability and death in children. Various mechanisms of injury and the unique properties of the growing skull lead to a number of skull fracture patterns in this age group. A strong foundational knowledge about these trauma mechanisms and fracture types can aid in diagnosis, guide treatment, and provide information about the prognosis. Although most skull fractures can be treated with conservative management, timely identification of more severe injuries can be life-saving. After reviewing this chapter, the reader should be able to: (1) consider the unique epidemiology and characteristics of head injury in children; (2) review the appropriate diagnostic imaging techniques to work up pediatric head trauma; (3) discuss the appropriateness of conservative vs. operative management; (4) predict potential short- and long-term complications of various skull fracture types.
