Popis: | This report presents strong evidence that the Greater FlamingoPhoenicopterus ruber has bred in Cyprus for the first time in the summer of 2001. In the beginning of August 2001,4 juvenile birds were observed. These birds were too young to fly. After searching the shoreline for nests, a group of 40 nests were discovered. Assuming that the four juvenile birds seen in the salt lake were produced from the observed 40 nest, the hatching success of eggs laid was estimated approximately 10%. All the nests were conical piles of dry mud. The cup was a shallow depression at the top. A large number of human, dog and fox tracks were seen in the area. The factors affecting hatching and chick survival are discussed. |
