Popis: The disease African swine fever is briefly described with emphasis on the evolution of the disease. The role of wild pigs, especially the warthog (Phacocoerus aethiopicus) in the maintenance of the disease in nature is explored and the importance of ticks of the genus Ornithodoros in the natural cycle of the virus is emphasized. The fact that the virus can be maintained in a tick population without the intervention of vertebrate hosts leads the author to propose that the African swine fever virus may in fact be an arthropod virus which only accidentally infects wild and domestic pigs.
