Assessing Quality of Life Related to Oral Health and Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetic Patients - A Pilot Study Using GOHAI Test

| Popis: | Quality of life is an important outcome to accomplish, representing the final goal for the management of all general diseases. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic general disease with a high prevalence all over the world, mainly in adults and elderly. Patients with diabetes type 2 seem to have a worst quality of life in comparison to healthy ones. The objective of this study was to assess the oral health-related quality of diabetic type 2 patients in relation to general health status, medication and demographic factors. Methods: One hundred and thirty-five patients, 68 type 2 DM and 67 nondiabetic were interviewed. Health-related quality of life was evaluated using the GOHAI questionnaire and related to general health, clinical and sociodemographic variables. Statistical analyses were determined using SPSS 18, t-test, ANOVA test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient for quantitative variables and chi-test for qualitative variables. P value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Among the studied population, the mean age was 66 for diabetic patients and 69 for the nondiabetic ones. Females, from rural environment, obese, with more than 7% HbA1C levels reported worse quality of life. Smoking din not influenced significantly the results. Type 2 diabetic patients, with insulin therapy, with more than 10 years duration of disease, with other comorbidity present had lower results in all the three quality of life domains. Conclusion: We found that the quality of life in diabetic type 2 patients was lower in all the domains (psychological, physical, pain) in comparison with nondiabetic persons, but with little difference between study groups. |
