Carbon-13 chemical shifts are reported for various atoms in 12 series of substituted styrenes. The reliability of the correlations between substituent effects on such shifts and σ+ values is discussed, as is the reliability of the use of a σ+ scale that has been modified to fit NMR data. A new σ scale for para substituents, derived solely from NMR data and designated σ13, is proposed and evaluated. Further, a rationale is proposed for previously and presently reported “reverse” correlations in which electron donors produce downfield shifts. Data is presented for a series of styrene vinylogues (1,1-dicyano-3-methyl-4-aryl-1,3-butadienes) to substantiate the interpretation. |
