Popis: While the vast majority of cases of acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (PSGN) in man are caused by infection with group A streptococci (GAS) there have been well-documented instances associated with non-GAS, in particular with the zoonotic group C Streptococcus zooepidemicus1, 2. Recent evidence (similiar molecular weight, serological response and localisation in biopsies) indicates that the nephritis strain-associated protein (NSAP)6, Vogt’s cationic protein7 and nephritis plasmin binding protein (NBPB)5 are in reality the same protein and identical to Elliot’s streptococcal proteinase3 or streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin B (SPEB). These proteins are clearly distinct from streptokinase4. To date SPEB has not been reported in non-group A pyogenic streptococci. We have investigated both nephritogenic and apparently non-nephritogenic isolates of S. zooepidemicus for the presence of NPBP/SPEB.
