A recent need at the U.S. Air Force’s Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) for simulating mixed-phase (ice crystal and water droplet) flow conditions for engine component testing, lead to a review of submillimeter, supercooled water particle freezing. From the review, models for water particle freezing were developed and incorporated into a one-dimensional, multi phase flow code. The flow code was then used to analyze conditions in both research scale as well as full-scale component test facilities, to attempt to understand the processes leading to water particle freezing in cold, ducted, multi phase flows for icing and adverse weather simulation testing. spray nozzles, and not in the ducted flows themselves. In fact, ice crystal melting was indicated to have occurred in the ducted flow downstream of the air-blast nozzles that created the ice crystals. |
