In recent years, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become the electrochemical energy storage technology of choice for portable devices, electric vehicles, and grid storage. However, the lack of a fast charging technology restricts the further development of LIBs. Carbon-based materials have been extensively researched as electrode materials for fast-charging LIBs owing to their abundance, low cost, nontoxicity, and electrochemical diversity. This study reviews the recent research progress in the application of carbon-based materials as electrode materials for fast charging LIBs. First, the mechanism of fast charging in LIBs is summarized using graphite-based batteries. Subsequently, this article introduces recent research progress in carbon anodes (graphite modification and compounding, graphene-based composite materials, carbon nanotube-based materials, and other carbon-based materials) and carbon cathodes in fast charging LIBs, with special emphasis on the relationship between the electrode structure and fast charging performance. Finally, the future development of the application of carbon-based materials in fast charging LIBs is prospected. |
