In March 1993, the Dutch Section of Ifgene took the initiative for a public debate in Amsterdam on the supposed benefits of biotechnology. The chairman of the NIABA, the Dutch Society of Biotechnological Engineers, took the opportunity to give a full exposition of his ethical stance. This can be summarized in a simple formula: biotechnology in relation to humans, ‘No!’ (only in rare exceptions, when lives depend on it in the medical sphere); biotechnology in relation to animals, ‘No, unless’ (unless, again, human lives are at stake and can only be saved by medicines of animal origin); biotechnology in relation to plants, ‘Yes, provided that’ (sufficient safety measures are met); biotechnology in relation to bacteria, ‘Yes’. |
