Described is an improvement to the STAR‐C space nuclear power system concept in which the ‘‘conventional’’ thermionic converters are replaced with thermionic converters having ‘‘transparent’’ collectors. There are two variants of this new STAR‐C design: one in which the ‘‘transparent’’ converters are located at the outside of the STAR‐C core, as are the converters in the reference STAR‐C, and the other in which the heat from the core is transported by heat pipes to the converters on the opposite side of the sheld from the reactor. The ‘‘transparent’’ thermionic converter is a recent novel concept based upon the use of sapphire or diamond as the converter collector base material (Fitzpatrick 1989). The actual collector is a thin semi‐transparent surface layer of metal. The collector is therefore largely transparent in that the thermal radiation absorbed from the emitter is small. Reduction in the radiative loss from the emitter has the direct effect of increasing conversion efficiency. This transparent coll... |
