Understanding the unique mechanical properties of living cells in general, and specifically those of metastatic cancer cells, can lead to major developments in treatment and prevention of diseases. We combine cell micromechanics measurements with cell biology techniques to elucidate the mechanical response of cells. We focus on cells with different metastatic potentials and their response to cytoskeletal perturbation. We have observed different mechanical responses to microtubule disruption in cells with different metastatic potential. The response was different as compared to each cell lines' control, although the control cells exhibited similar mechanical behavior. Our results may provide a more quantitative measure for metastatic potential in cells, as compared to the common medical definition. |
