This chapter provides a community performance in a migrant-sending community in Metro Manila. The director estimated that less than half of the culminating performance would be based on the Nanay script. A cultural movement of poems, songs, improvised stage performances, visual exhibits and protest effigies were and remain an integral component of the resistance against numerous state repressions. As a Migrante cultural event, the community performance of Nanay in Bagong Barrio was always already enmeshed in politics. As important and perhaps more enduring are the effects felt by Sining Bulosan youths. Sining Bulosan has performed scenes from the play at mass demonstrations and at other Migrante events. The collaboration with the Philippine Women Centre of British Columbia began in participatory research, and feminist, anti-racist scholarship; collaborating with Migrante in the Philippines opened new questions about insidious and enduring patterns of colonialism and what solidarity towards decolonial futures might mean. |
