Popis: Since the early 1990s, the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement coupled with environmental initiatives have imposed the need for reform in crop farming. The aim of this reform should be to produce internationally competitive crops and deal with ecological disturbances caused by agricultural activities. In addition, the «Rural Europe: Perspectives for the Future» convention of Cork, Ireland, in November 1996, with delegates from all European Union (EU) member countries, the rest of Europe, Canada, USA, and Japan, concluded with a declaration that future agricultural policies must be more closely oriented to the goals of environmental protection and rural development (Anonymous, 1997a).
