Popis: | In June 1999, Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) surveyed approximately 234 acres of private land for the proposed El Paso Natural Gas Company (EPNG) 2039 pipeline relocation/removal project. AZ T:12:116(ASM}—a previously recorded Hohokam site also known as Pueblo del Rio—was located within the proposed area of impact. ACS concluded that as the site’s integrity and ability to contribute important information about the area’s prehistory were unknown; testing was necessary to evaluate its eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places (Aguila 1999a). A testing plan was prepared to determine the presence and condition of the subsurface deposits (Aguila 1999b). Focused on T:12:116 and nearby prehistoric and historic canals, the testing plan covered only a small portion of the overall EPNG project area. Testing was conducted on August 30-September 17,1999 under project-specific permit #1999-123ps issued by the Arizona State Museum (ASM). Twenty-eight features were found, including one pithouse, at least one burial, numerous pits, four canals, and a reservoir. The findings indicate significant subsurface cultural deposits; therefore, Pueblo del Rio and its associated prehistoric canals are recommended as eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. A segment of the historic Farmers Canal (AZ T:12:129(ASM)) also was identified. The Farmers Canal is potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register; however, the segment that crosses the EPNG right-of-way lacks integrity. The data recovered during testing is insufficient to determine the eligibility of the canal as a whole. |
