Popis: | Ravelling, which is defined as aggregate loss from an asphalt surface, is one of the modes of failure of flexible pavements in both highways and airport pavement surfaces. Ravelling is a complex phenomenon that has many interdisciplinary mechanisms and causes. One of the major objectives of this study was set to provide a clear basis for the evaluation of different mixtures in terms of ravelling resistance. A preliminary investigation of three airports in south-east Queensland and surface texture measurements using a laser texture meter indicated no statistically significant difference between trafficked and untrafficked sections in both runways and taxiways. Hence, a realistic test that simulates environmental field conditions that leads to bitumen ageing and mixture embrittlement which causes ravelling has been proposed and a weathering chamber that combines UV irradiation and heat has been used to simulate field conditions in addition to an air-flow oven. |
