Popis: | Hygroelectric (HE) generators based on ERG (exfoliated and reassembled graphite) and metal electrodes are efficient devices for harvesting electricity from environmental moisture reaching steady 85 mW/m2 and transient 2 W/m2. The electrode materials are readily available and produced from abundant commodities. The theoretical model for energy production of these systems derives from the thermodynamic analysis of the HE cells, considering that they are multiphase, non-electroneutral open systems. This allows water ions to partition while adsorbing on different surfaces, imparting different electric potentials to them, increasing the ions' electrochemical potentials, and decreasing the Gibbs energy of the water-splitting reaction. Hygroelectricity has now reached energy outputs suitable for some niche applications. Further improvements can transform it into a competitive alternative for distributed energy production in synergy with biomass production in plant vases, crop areas, greenhouses, and forests.
