Popis: This chapter focuses on the effectiveness of primary schools in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Pupils were tracked through grades 4 to 6 of primary school. The initial sample consisted of 4787 pupils in 80 classes and 49 schools in two major cities, Kisangani and Bunia. Each year, data were collected from students, teachers and principals. Multilevel analysis showed that in reading and mathematics achievement differences between schools were larger than those between classes within schools. In mathematics achievement in grade 4, only class composition in prior mathematics achievement and principal experience predicted later achievement. We conclude with reflections on educational effectiveness in a central African country.
