The purpose of this research is to investigate the imam hatip high school student’s perception and experience of being an imam hatip student. The research has been carried out among 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students from 5 different anatolian imam hatip high schools in Maltepe, Istanbul, affiliated to General Directorate of Religious Education (Ministry of Education), based on voluntariness. In the study, qualitative research design and phenomenology method have been used. Within the context of the study, literature review has been done, 20 students have been asked 7 open-ended questions and interviewed face to face through semi-structured interview method. In the analysis of the outcome, codes have been designated in accordance with the students’ reference opinions and themes/subthemes have been created. The outcome of the study is as follows: When imam hatip high school students’ perception and thoughts about their school have been evaluated, it has been seen that, not only the quality of education and training programs applied but also the socio-cultural environment at school have met the expectations of the students on a higher level compared to those graduated from other schools. In addition to this, when the students’ perception of school and the achievements affecting the formation of their imam hatip identities are analysed it has primarily been found out that social roles and responsibilities, followed by personal and social characteristics together with piety are the most outstanding features that contributed the formation of this identity. In some cases, students have reported that they are facing prejudice and insultation in the relationship with others. |
