The high gain mode of a gas counter was studied with a proportional counter made of a 30 μm or 50 μm thick anode wire and a 7 mm × 10 mm rectangular resistive plastic tube backed with a pickup cathode. In this mode, a large output signal, typically about 100 mV/50 Ω, was obtained from anode or cathode directly. A saturation of the signal against the energy loss of the incident β and γ rays was observed. With the multi-strip pickup cathode configuration the centroid of the signal distribution was determined within 200 μm for a single particle avalanche. The dead time of the counter is about 5 μs locally, and a characteristic time duration of the signal corresponding to multiple streamers has been observed. |
