The birefringence of polyesterurethane films when polarized light is passed at an angle to the film surface has been investigated. The thickness of the optically anisotropic surface layer has been evaluated. Molecular fragments in the surface layers are oriented mainly normally to the film surface. It was found that the optical anisotropy of the surface layers increases in the process of heating the polymers at 100–140°C. These effects are explained by a molecular model according to which rigid blocks of the polyesterurethanes form domains immersed in a matrix consisting of flexible polyfurite chains. The extremal character of curves of the transition temperature to the high-elastic state, and of plots of the surface birefringence versus the number of rigid blocks in the copolyurethane is related to the degree of orientational order of rigid blocks in the domains. |
