Popis: | We prepared pi cells by adding a small amount of a UV-curable monomer to a nematic liquid crystal. The mixture of the monomer and liquid crystal was used to fill an empty cell with low-pretilt, parallel-aligned surfaces and subjected to an applied voltage (curing voltage) in polymerization. The polymer network formed in the liquid crystal host was utilized to control the alignment state of the liquid crystal (LC). The observation of polymer-aligned pi cells under a polarizing optical microscope showed that the splay-to-bend transition behavior of the liquid crystal was influenced in those cells subjected to various curing voltages. A model is proposed to explain the results. |
